Lessons Learned.

Sometimes I think to myself “I’ve been doing this Weight Watchers thing for almost 5 years now, I’ve got this in the bag, it’s no sweat”.

Then I wake up.

Mistake Number 1: Giving myself permission to not track for the week surrounding my birthday.

Mistake Number 2: Giving myself permission to enjoy as many treats as I wanted for the week surrounding my birthday.

Mistake Number 3: Not getting back on the wagon right away as soon as the celebrations were over.

Now, I realize that this whole WeightWatchers thing is a lifestyle, not a diet. Trust me, I tell the members in my meetings that all the time. But I also have a life to live, and I have celebrations to enjoy and parties to attend.  I live in the real world, and in the real world, food is apart of celebration.  You can’t escape it.  What you can do is CONTROL it. That is where I failed over the last 10 days.

I mean, you only turn 35 once, right?

But man, I went over board!

It started the Friday before my birthday with dinner with N’s parents. Then it was my family dinner on Saturday. Company at N’s house sunday.  A quite dinner for 2 on Monday. My birthday dinner with friends on Tuesday. A birthday cupcake lunch date on Wednesday.  A cupcake gift from my lovely friend Jenn on Thursday, followed by a cupcake from my Weight Watchers members that evening. And finally, a delicious gift from Pink Sugar Cupcakery on Friday, that lasted all weekend!

Seriously! The treats have been never ending.

Check this out.

I had a slice of lemon log cake at N’s parents house.

I had a slice of the “Ultimate” from Lighthouse Cake Company at my family dinner, another slice with our company on Sunday at N’s house, and another slice on Monday after dinner with N.

Then on Tuesday, N & I shared this delicious cake at Milestones.

Wednesday’s cupcake date was at Ooh La La Cupcakes. They opened a new location just around the corner from my over, I like to call it the “DANGER ZONE”.  Anyway, I had the French Kiss (My date had the Pink Ballerina pictures in the background).   The French Kiss is also the cupcake the amazing Miss Jennifer brought to my office before Weight Watcher work on Thursday! Nothing live having a friend/ WeightWatchers coworker enable your cupcake addiction! HAHA!

Thursday evening, at my WeightWatchers meeting, one of my members disappeared after weighing in and returned shortly after the meeting started with this piece of deliciousness.  I have to tell you, I was a little bewildered by the ‘hard’ appearance of the icing at first, but when I finally got around to eating it, I discovered the softest, fluffiest, most delicious icing under the hard chocolate coating.

Then came Friday. I received a tweet from Pink Sugar Cupcakery. They had something waiting for me!  Oooooh man! Cupcakes! I love cupcakes! Yay cupcakes!   I Went for lunch with a friend on Friday, then we walked up to the cupcakery to pick up the surprise. It was a tray of their mini-cupcakes.

This is the exact moment I realized I had overdone it for my birthday.  They handed me this tray, and I actually felt nauseous!

ME! NAUSEOUS! Over CUPCAKES?

What has happened??

The good news is, by the end of the day, I had gotten over the nausea and was actually looking forward to having a mini after supper!

Phew! I had thought something was seriously wrong with me for a while there.

On Saturday morning, I took one of the cupcakes with my to WeightWatchers work as a treat for my friend who had walked to pick them up with me.  It’s Now Tuesday and there are still 4 minis in the fridge at home.

One thing I have to say though is that, outside of the 11(so far) consecutive days of having a treat, I have been on top of my other food choices.  I ‘treated’ myself to the Prime Rib at Milestones for my birthday dinner, but resisted the urge to order the larger “chefs cut” and asked them for half the mashed potatoes and extra veggies.  I didn’t take second helpings of anything, including dessert, at any of my celebratory meals. The only time I really went off track with my actual meals was on Saturday night when I had an appetizer and a chicken cheese burger w/ yam fries at the pub on my ‘no cell phone’ date with N.

Yesterday I started tracking again. And today I’m going to start taking pictures of my food so I can start back up with the daily blog posts tomorrow.

I know that a week of eating right, and getting back to the gym/running will totally erase any temporary damage I may have done with my recent indulgences.

Now, what I want to know is… I’m not alone, right?  There have been times where you guys have totally gone off of the wagon and had to work really hard to get back on track, right?
