I am the new me. Rotating Header Image

I made my (not so) triumphant return…

I went back to the gym last night, after taking over a week off to let the mess that is my toe heal up.

I was not feeling it, but I knew I had to go.

My goal for yesterday was just to run.  If I could get there and run, I would be happy.   Save the weights & the bike for another day.

I got there and got on the treadmill, hoping to watch the Canucks game while I ran.

I usually walk for about 2 minutes to warm up when I start the treadmill, so I flipped through the channels trying to find the game, but it wasn’t there. UGH! Well, I sucked it up, turned on the news and started running.

This is when I realized just how bad of an idea it was to take a week off mid-marathon training.

My body was not loving it.

The news wasn’t cutting it, so I switched over to my iPod and cranked some tunes. I can always run faster when I’ve got music on. But running fast is hard work, and I got tired quickly. It was at this point that I noticed the girl on the treadmill beside me was watching the Canucks game! WHAT THE HECK? Why does her TV get the game when mine doesn’t? I asked her what channel it was on & managed to find it on my TV.

I slowed the treadmill down to a comfortable, easy pace, and just focused on the game.   I told myself to run until the end of the 1st period.  It’s probably a good thing that it was a scoreless first period, I can’ti maging the funny faces I would have gotten screaming at the TV while running!

Turns out that by the time the first period was over, I had run for 45 minutes. 15 minutes longer than I had planned to run.

It was really hard to find my motivation to get to the gym yesterday, but I knew I had to do it.  I knew that if I am going to stick to my goal to run the FULL marathon at the BMO Vancouver Marathon then I had to get back to the gym and get my training back on track. And really, even if I chose to switch my registration to the half marathon, I still needed to get back in to a training groove.

As hard as it was to get back to the gym, and as much as it sucked trying to find my groove, I am glad I went. I felt better for it.  My body feels so much better for having exercised. Not to mention my mind.  My mind always feels better after I get my sweat on.

Unfortunately, the ‘wounded toe’ is angry with me today. It didn’t really like being all sweaty and gross, so I am going to have to figure out a better way to protect it before I go for a run tonight.

I still haven’t made a decision on whether I will run the full or the half on May 1st. But I do know that I am capable of doing which ever I choose.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words & support while I figure this out!
