Seeking Professional Help!

I recently came  to the conclusion that it is time to seek professional help.

I just can’t do it on my own any more.

I’ve decided to hire a coach to help me meet my running goals.

After finally meeting my goal of running a sub-4hr marathon, I realized that with a little hard work, I can do anything I put my mind to.   I just need a little push from time to time.   So, to give me that push, I’ve hired Marilyn Arsenault, also know as @1fastdiva in the twitterverse.  She runs a series of running clinics called Mindful Strides, and I’ve also signed up for her beginner clinic to learn better running form.

I’ve been on my new training program for a couple weeks now, and I have to say that it has actually brought me back to the joy of running.

Until now, my training has always been mileage based. I’m not saying it hasn’t been successful for me, but I am ready for a change.  My past program has told me how many kilometres to run on 3 or 4 days a week, but now my focus is on time & effort. My work outs are given to me as a length of time and a level of effort, such as “30′: easy”,  “40′: easy/steady” and so on.

I find this refreshing. Instead of going out for 5km and thinking that I have to run it as fast as possible, now I go out for half an hour and run around wherever I feel like going. It’s kind of fun, like being a kid running around playing.  And I usually end up covering the same amount of ground!

Another thing I’ve noticed is that I am more inclined to run.  I’ve only missed one run since I started training with Marilyn, and that was just life getting in the way.  I’ve been able to schedule life around my runs, and my runs around my life. I’ve gone out in the rain on a Friday night, and before 7am on a Saturday morning, 2 things I wouldn’t have done before, when I was in charge of my own training.

Looking beyond 2012, and in to 2013, I’m excited to set new goals for my shorter distance events, and to focus on just one Marathon, instead of the 2 a year I’ve been doing for the last 2 years.

But until then, I’m really excited to see the results of this new approach to training when I run the Victoria Marathon in October.

This is going to be good!

Hey Kirsty! I’m so happy I found your blog… my weeks just aren’t the same without your meetings! I’ve been having appointments every Tues/Thurs evenings with Dr. Mike so I keep missing them!! I’ve been going Wednesdays, but hopefully I’ll be back to Thurs soon! P.S. Congrats on your half yesterday (your time, considering you weren’t really feelin’ it that much, is so impressive to me!!) P.P.S. Love that you’re tweeting about the Bachelorette. LOVE the show and am watching it too 🙂
