WeightWatchers Changes Are Coming, and they call it 360°

I have to admit it, every year when the teasers start coming in our staff emails, I get a little nervous.

Everyone fears change.

Our members fear change. They trust the program that they know, so when we tell them we’re changing it, it causes fear.

Here’s the thing I’ve learned over the years though, WeightWatchers always changes for the best!

When we first launched PointsPlus in 2010, I was one of the resistant ones.  They introduced us to the program, and asked us to start living it, 3 weeks before a race I was training for, and there was NO WAY I was changing my routine at that point in time.   Once the race was over, I started living PointsPlus, and I admit, it was hard at first, but once December rolled around and we were talking to members about it, it all got a lot easier.

The PointsPlus program has, by far, been my personal favourite version of the WeightWatchers Points system.  So when teasers starting coming that there were changes in the works, I worried.  I worried, but I KNOW WeightWatchers only changes for the better.

Once I saw the training materials, and watched the videos, it all started to make sense.

Don’t worry, PointsPlus isn’t going anywhere. We’re not changing that!

What is changing is that we will be presenting things to you!  It’s going to be more fun, it’s going to be more interactive, it’s going to make more sense!

I’m not going to tell you all about it, you can go to WeightWatchers.ca to read all about it!  What I am going to tell you is that I am excited about it!  I’m excited to talk about the new science that backs up the plan! I’m excited to start using the new tools!

Most of all, I’m excited to see all the members having more success than ever!

So, check out the meeting finder and make your way to a meeting so that you can hear all about the new WeightWatchers 360° program starting the week of December 2nd!

On being anonymous after 5 years.

On January 2nd, 2007 I joined WeightWatchers.

Om January 3rd, 2012 I went to a WeightWatchers meeting in another city, where no one knows me, so I could sit down as an anonymous member and get myself refocused.

I’ve been a member for 5 years, I’ve been at goal for over 3 years, I’ve been on staff for 2 years.

All of these are great things, but sometimes I miss being ‘JUST’ a member.

I can go to any WeightWatchers meeting in Victoria that I want. I can attend as many meetings as I can fit in to my schedule, but I can’t be a member.  All the staff in Victoria know me, and while they are great, that means I’m not ‘JUST’ a member when I go in to their meeting room.

So why did I want to be ‘JUST’ a member?

The answer is simple. I lost focus. I was gliding. I was sliding. I was slipping.

To quote a blog a read recently: I wasn’t out of control, but I wasn’t IN control.

With it being the New Year, and my 5 year anniversary on program, I thought this was the perfect time to refocus.

The first thing I did was commit to tracking again!   The first couple days were a struggle.  I tracked everything, but couldn’t seem to stay within my daily points target.  I am very thankful for my weekly points plus allowance and my activity points right now.

The second thing I did was get back in to my activity routine. As I have on New Years Day for the previous 4 years, I got up in the morning and headed out to the Running Room for the annual Resolution Run.  I ran the 5K distance, but there is also an option for a 10K.  I also got out on my bike for half an hour on the 2nd.  Being active again feels good.

The third thing I did was to make the decision to attend a meeting as an anonymous member. I decided that I was going to weigh in as a member. I wasn’t going to tell them I was staff, EVEN if I was above goal and had to pay the weekly fee.  I wanted to maintain my anonymity.

I have to tell you, it was so nice to be in a meeting room where no one knew me.  It was great to participate in a meeting as a member. I also have to say that it was eye opening to experience the nerves of weighing in as a member. To know that if I wasn’t within 2lbs of my goal weight I’d have to fork over $17.91 really made me nervous.  (Thankfully I was JUST within my free buffer zone) I sat through the meeting, listening to the chatter of the regular members, and watching the shy nervousness of the new members. I participated in the meeting, answering questions and sharing my experiences. I even stayed for the PowerStart Session: Power Choices.

I managed to maintain my anonymity right up until the very end.  Right until the point where the leader said “Wow, you’re really informed, you should think about becoming a leader”.  I laughed and confessed that  I am already a leader, and thanked for her for the great meeting and for letting me be ‘JUST’ a member again for an hour.

As a WeightWatchers Service Provider it renewed my appreciation for what members feel every week when they come to their weigh in.  It was also really nice to see a new leader, with her own style, and how she relates to her group. It really made me feel re-energized as a leader and gave me new ideas on how to approach my meetings.

Seeing a new leader, through the eyes of a member has inspired me and given me all kinds of new energy and new ideas that I am going to bring to my meeting room this week.

I feel refreshed and re-energized both as a member and a leader.

I’m looking forward to taking on PointsPlus 2012, and motivating and inspiring my members to have all the successes they can achieve.

A week of what I eat – Day 7

Day 7!

Wow! I am totally impressed with myself that I made it this far! Today is going to be a tricky one, since it is weigh in day, and I lead a Weight Watchers meeting after work tonight.  On Thursday, everything I eat is done so “on the run”.

By now, you know how the day starts. With a cup of tea at home and one on the drive in.  Yup, a pretty standard morning in that respect.

Old habits die hard, and even though I work for Weight Watchers, I am still very much a Member first.   Thursday is weigh in day, and I have this thing about eating breakfast on weigh in day.   I guess I think that eating a heavy, hearty bowl of oatmeal on Thursday will erase all the hard work of the rest of the week.  Yes, I know it is irrational, but if there is one thing I know, it is that the majority of Weight Watchers members have some kind of weigh in day routine or superstition!  So I don’t feel alone, tell me, what is yours?

Something I love about this picture of my morning coffee, which today is made with  a WW Chocolate smoothie, instead of chocolate milk, is that you can see my “I LOST 5 POUNDS!” bookmark in the background, with my collection of 5lbs stars & Bravo Stickers!   That bookmark has been on my desk for 3 years now, to remind me what I have accomplished!

My Thursday, Roast Beef Sandwich! I wait all week for this sucker.  The place I go knows exactly what I want, and how I like it.   It is worth every single one of the 10pts+ I track for it!

The other thing I wait all week for is this delicious piece of chocolatey, sugary goodness.  A Nanaimo Bar. From the bakery I normally go to. Not a tasteless, cheap, imitation from some other place!  This nanaimo bar was absolutely worth the 6pts+.

Okay, here is where we get in to some serious honesty.  This used to be my weekly treat. And when it was my weekly treat, I didn’t track it. I once calculated the points, and it is worth 9pts+. It is Rice Pudding. It’s an English thing.  Lately, I’ve only been having it once a month… and I still don’t track it.  I don’t know why, I just hate tracking it.  Maybe it’s the ‘uh oh, I’m being naughty’ feeling that comes with eating something without tracking it, I don’t know. The thing is, I DO eat it, and I KNOW it is 9pts+, so I’m not fooling anyone, especially not myself!

On Thursday after work at the day job, I get in the car and head straight across town for work at Weight Watchers. With just 45 minutes between the two jobs, I have to grab something quick, filling and portable.   Enter, beef jerky! only 2pts+ for the package, and it totally holds me over until the end of my meeting.  Throw a banana in there to fill me up, and you have a satisfying, speedy, transportable ‘meal’.

Once I got home from work, I couldn’t resist the urge for another bowl of weetabix, but this time I managed to stick to just 3 biscuits (5pts+) and 1/2 a cup of milk(1pts+), for a total of 6pts+.

So, there you have it, one week of what I eat. All 7 days!

What do you think?? Manageable? Livable? Satisfying?

Does anyone want to send me in the pictures and descriptions from one day of their food, for a guest post in the coming weeks??

A week of what I eat – Day 6

I find it hard to believe that I actually stuck to my plan to blog everything I eat this week!  Only one more day to go!

This post is going up on Thursday, because Wednesday was a ridiculously hectic day & I ran out of time to write and post this. So, here I sit on Thursday morning, whipping it up at the office before the work day starts!

Being that it is Thursday, that means today is weigh in day, so I get to see how all this work paid off this week!

Now, let’s get to Wednesday’s food!

By now I am sure you all know how the day starts.  Cup of tea when I’m getting ready for work. Cup of tea on the drive, and my 7pts+ oatmeal concoction for breakfast!

The teas wasn’t finished yet, but there was coffee! So the tea cup got pushed to the back and the coffee cup took centre stage!  It’s the usual, 4pts+ Mocha.

The morning coffee wasn’t enough, so banana o’clock came with a little 0pts+ caffeinated friend!

You have seen this lunch before this week. It’s my stand by, in the freezer, go to, 4pts+ pasta lunch.

At some point in the afternoon, I realized I have a slight beverage container issue on my desk.   It can end up being quite cluttered by the end of the day!

The afternoon involved a fruit salad for 0pts+…

and there was also a banana o’clock.  (which I almost forgot to take a picture of)

And then there was last night’s post run dinner.   I had this odd craving for a bowl of cereal and cold milk, so I stopped at the store on the way home & picked up some Weetabix & Milk.   I ended up spending a lot of points on this, because I went back for a 4th biscuit.   So it was 4 biscuits (7pts+)  & 3/4 cup of milk(2pts+).

So, that’s day 6… with Thursday being Day 7, that is the end of my quest to blog everything for the week.

What do you think, should I continue for another week?

Please leave your comments below!

A week of what I eat – Day 5

I’m pretty sure by now you all know that my day starts with a cup of tea while I’m getting ready for work, then a cup of tea for the drive to work.  Again, it’s the same morning oatmeal as day one, for 7pts+.

Then it was the cup off coffee that sparked the “Who makes the coffee in your office?” conversation on twitter. My morning “Mocha” for 4pts+.

Banana o’clock arrived right on schedule this morning. I forgot to take my vitamins with breakfast, so there they are at banana o’clock!

I’m a marathon runner who hates water!  Staying hydrated is hard for me.  I will choose coke zero, tea or coffee over water any day. But lately, since I got my Kool FM water bottle, for some reason I am finding it easier to drink my water.  I do use a little Crystal Light to add some flavour to make it bearable to drink!

For lunch today, I had to pop out of the office and buy something because I had been too lazy to go to the grocery store last night!  I headed down the street to a place called the Sandwich Corner. I love this place. The paninis are delicious!  This is their “Philly Steak” Panini. It is on the small side for a panini, but well worth it’s 10pts+.

Yesterday I had a craving for a Nanaimo Bar.  I couldn’t get it out of my head, so I had no chance of resisting when I saw them in the display case at the sandwich shop.  Usually a Nanaimo Bar is well worth the 6pts+ I spend on them, but this one was seriously sub par and I am left feeling let down.  It’s kinda like when you covet a dress on a mannequin in a store window, only to have it look like crap when you try it on. That kind of disappointment!

What a tiny steak tonight. I tracked 3pts+ for it.  The cup pf brocolli was 0pts and the potatoes cost me 5pts! EEK! It has been a high points day.

Tomorrow will be better!

How was your day?

A week of what I eat – Day 4

Today started like every day. With a cup of tea while I get ready for work. Only, I forget to take a picture of my morning cup of tea in my special N’s house cup! !

Before I left the house, I made another cup of tea for the road, in my I <3 cup cakes cup. Then at the office, it was the usual 7pts+ breakfast and a 4pts+ work mocha!

Banana o’clock was preceded by a trip to the 7-Eleven across the street to get bananas, because I forgot them at home this morning.  I also almost forgot to take a picture, so here is a half eaten banana.

Lunch was a recipe I’ve made a few times now. The recipe makes 6 servings and includes 2tbs of Canola Oil, 2 chicken breasts and 2 cups of whole wheat pasta.  One serving = 4pts+. Of course, there is my ever present lunch time coke zero!

Hey, look. My water bottle made an appearance today.  It is amazing how easy it is to drink water when you fill the bottle and put it on your desk!

Hmm, the daily fruit salad. I love how when I put a little squirt from the aerosol can of cool whip on my fruit salad in the morning, it is liquid by the time I eat it.   0pts+ for all the fruit, and the usual 1pt+ for the light cool whip.

Banana o’clock came twice today!

Dinner tonight was a case of eating what is in the house.  I have to say, much less creativity and effort goes in to a dinner for one.  Another 5pts+ steak, 0pts+ for the broccoli and onion, and 1pts+ for the canola oil used in the onion cooking.

But it turns out that the lack of a starch in my dinner was noticed by my tummy, so I made myself a little bit of mashed potato. Half a baked potato, mushed up with a little bit of parmesan cheese, salt & pepper. The potato cost me 2pts+ and the cheese cost me 1.

All in all, I think it was a pretty good food day.  26pts+ used, and 3 left.

How was your day in food?

A week of what I eat – day 3

Breakfast on a Sunday consists of the daily oatmeal & a cup of tea. Are you starting to notice a trend here? 7pts. +

The drive down from Shawnigan to Victoria today, to be there by 8:30am for my 19K run, made it an extra tea needed morning, and since I had forgotten both my travel mugs at home, it was a trip to Timmy’s for a steeped tea.  A love 0pts+, if only it was $0!

On average, I earn 1 activity point for every kilometer I run.  So today’s 19K run earned me about 19pts.   That means when I get to the coffee shop after the run, I have plenty of points to indulge in a tummy treat.  Today was a white chocolate mocha, for 6pts+ and a bagel & cream cheese. The bagel was 4pts, it was a small one, and a tbs of cream cheese is 1pt.

When I got back up to the lake, N wanted to go to Home Depot to check some prices on the baseboard trim  and trim for around the doors in the rooms where the painint and renovations are complete. I was getting hungry, so I graabed myself a ‘fried’ egg. Cooked in pam cooking spay, a slice of white toast and a drizzle of ketchup.  2 pts+ for the egg, 0pts for that little ketchup and 2pts+ for the slice of toast.  All in all, it was a tasty quick, lunch on the run.  THere was a cup of tea with it, b  ut it never made it in to the photograph.

I knew the toast & egg wasn’t going to be enough to hold me over until we got back from our errands, so I grabbed a banana and threw it in my purse. Half way through the outing, it was banana o’clock!

Tonight, N got to pick what was for dinner. He makes these pizzas on tortilla shells that are absolutely delicious. He uses plain old 12 inch white tortillas, but while we were out, I picked up some whole weat, 8 inch tortillas.   I made sure we took the time to measure all the ingredients. There was a LOT of cheese that I could cut back on bext time.  There are 2 tortillas at 2pts each, the different cheeses total almost 1 1/2 cups and 8pts(see, I could cut back)!!

Oh my goodness, that looks like a deceptively large amount of coolwhip on tonight’s fruit salad!  It’s really just the angle of the picture, and the size of the bowl. It’s no more coolwhip than I normally have.  0pts+ for the fruits, and 1pt+ for the ymmy cool whip!

Again, as last night, I welcome your comments on how you would track these things.

A week of what I eat – Day 2

As I said yesterday, I’m a creature of habit and every day starts the same way.  The difference is, on Saturday I can’t eat at my desk at the office, so I have to eat breakfast before I leave for Weight Watchers work.

The oatmeal is the same as yesterday, for a total of 7pts, and the cup of tea is 0.

One thing that differs about Saturday, from every other day of the week, meaning I make my weekly stop at Serious Coffee, for my weekly coffee treat, a 6pts+ Mocha.  Yummy!

This afternoon, N & I went out checking out some Open Houses in the Colwood/Langford area to see if we could afford to leave the lake and move closer to civilization. Turns out the answer is no.   Before leaving though, I ate the salad that was left over from last night, but added some mandarine orange segments, and some chicken breast.  The salad was a total of 2pts+. 1pt for the feta, and 1pt for the chicken.  It wasn’t until after I made the salad, that I realized I had no salad dressing in the house!

One of out outings today was to Costco, and it is really hard to resist a Costco Hot Dog!  I had a hard time tracking this one, since the Weight Watchers iThing app lists hotdogs as anywhere from 5-10 points. I found one listed as “fastfood hotdog” and tracked that. It was 7pts+.  The onions & Ketchup were 0.

The rest of the afternoon seemed to fly by. I’m not sure where it went, but suddenly it was dinner time.  Tonight was steak again. I don’t normally eat this much steak,  but N picked up a bulk pack of steak today, and it was the only thing not frozen.  No starch with dinner tonight, because I forgot the potatoes at my house on my way here tonight.   There was a little bit of canola oil involved in the cooking of the onions, so that cost me 1pt. The steak was a little smaller than last night, but I still tracked it at 5pts.

Here is the thing, sometimes it is hard to estimate the points values of what you are eating when you don’t have the ability to weigh and measure at the time you are eating. So, I am curious to know how you would have tracked some of these things today.

Let me know what think!

After posting last’s day of food, I got a craving for a sweet treat, so I made myself a hot chocolate.  It is 3pts+, according to the nutrition data.  The light cool whip added another 1pt+, for a total of 4pts+.

A week of what I eat – Day 1

Everyday starts with a cup of tea.  This being day one of my quest to write a blog post, I actually forgot to take a photograph of my first cup of tea this morning in my special mug at N’s house.  I am sure you will see my mug soon enough though!

This would be the drive to work cup of tea.(0pts+ each)

Ah, breakfast. It’s the same thing every day. What can I say, I’m a creature of habit! Maple & Brown Sugar Oatmeal (3pts+), 1tbs Genisoy brand protien powder (3pts+), 2tbs Wheat Bran (1pts+), 1tbs ground flax (0pts+). That makes a filling breakfast that lasts me a good few hours, for a total of 7pts+.

My morning ‘work coffee’.  1/2 cup of 1% chocolate milk (2pts+), 2tbs Light Vanilla coffee cream (2pts+) and then I just top it up with coffee. It’s my home made morning mocha, for a total of 4pts+.

Shockingly enough, 11am was banana o’clock.  With my Vitamin D + Calcium that I’ve been taking since the Doctors suspected I may have a stress fracture in my foot. Apparently I need to make my bones stronger!

Lunch out at Cactus Club with a friend. I normally go for the Caesar Salad, but today I wanted something with lower points.  The greens & strawberries of course are a lovely 0pts+. The egg was 2pts+. Chicken Breast for 3pts+. I estimated a tablespoon of feta, for 1pt, then I tracked 1pt for the microscopic amount of vinaigrette I picked up dipping my fork in the dressing.  That makes a lovely lunch out, with great company, for 7pts.

Somehow, the afternoon passed without me stopping for a snack, but a day is never complete without an ice cold can of Coke Zero.

Lately I’ve been noticing a serious shortage of red meat in my diet, so I decided to stop and pick myself up a steak for dinner.  4oz (cooked) sirloin steak, 5pts+. The red onions were cooked with water & a little cooking spray. 1/2 Large baked potato, 2pts. 1 1/2 tbs nonfat greek yogurt, 0pts. Chives, 0pts. 1tbs real bacon bits, 1pt.

The salad consists of Lettuce, Carrots, Red Onions & Strawberries for 0pts and 15g of light feta cheese for 1pt.  I didn’t eat the salad though. The steak & potato were filling enough, so it’s going in the fridge for lunch tomorrow!

I have noticed that there isn’t a single ounce of water in any of these pictures. Although, I must admit that lately, with the lack of summer, my choice fluid has been tea.  That being said, I think it’s time to fill up the water bottle and get myself hydrated!

And I gave in to the need for the fruit salad! And it was delicious. All the fruit = 0pts+. And then the light coolwhip is 1pts+.

The impact of a few simple words…

I woke up this morning to the upbeat calypso song that is my Blackberry alarm clock.

As I fumbled to shut it off and hit snooze for 5 minutes, I saw on the screen that I had a Facebook notification.  I’m not quite sure how, but in my half asleep state I managed to open it up, and start reading.

What I found was the following amazing message from an old friend:

“Just have to take a moment again and let you know how freakin’ inspirational you are!
You’ve done so well Kirsty. And I’m so proud that you post all your successes!!
I want to tell you this everytime we pass each other but I never get the chance. It’s like I am star struck by your success and words are torn from my mouth!!
I am so proud of you! Keep chasing whatever has captivated you to chase your dreams, because it has done you well.”

I can’t tell you how perfect the timing was on this message. 2011 hasn’t had the best start for me, but that’s a topic for another post.

Sometimes, I find that, since I have been at my goal weight & active for so long, people aren’t as excited or supportive as they were when all this was new.  It is a rare occassion that I see/meet someone who knew the old me, so I don’t get that “WOW, you’ve lost so much weight, you look amazing” very often anymore. I have to admit, I’ve been missing it.

You don’t realize at the time, when you just starting this whole process, how much people’s words can motivate you!  When we are on our journey and someone says “You look great”, more often than not, the first words out of out mouths are “But I’ve got so far to go!”.

For those of you who are still on your weight loss journey, I want you to stop and thank those people when they acknowledge your progress! You will miss it when it stops!

For the rest of us, those who have lost the weight, and even those who never had the weight to lose at all, this is what I want you to do; I want you to take some time over this weekend and tell someone how they inspire you.  Pick up the phone & call them, or write them a heartfelt email.

I’m about to do just that. I’m going to write a letter to my WeightWatchers leader and thank her for her support along my journey. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be where I am today!
